NANNY GESCHICHTEElizabeth Melnick has a shelter in Abbotsford that deals with all the forest critters that can be found in the area. She gave us a very warm welcome in the morning and proudly showed us her facility, which constists of several small buildings that house everything from squirrels to ravens and possum babies. In the outside enclosure as we were filming her with the possum babies, Elizabeth suddenly mentioned to be careful as a little squirrel that she just released a day ago is still lingering between the cages. We quickly worked the little scene stealer into the shot – he even jumped on Anke's arm to look for peanuts.
Then we were off to take a rabbit with a torn open leg to the vet with Elizabeth. Dogs and cats frequently maul and injure small wildlife – and Elizabeth ends up with the „emergency“ results. She is well known at most of the local vets. Because Elizabeth has a VERY TINY little baby bird that needs to be fed every 20 minutes, he too has to come along for the ride. At Dr.Taylor's office the little bird the size of a pinkietip is quickly the center of attention with the staff. While the rabbit is x-rayed and sutured Elizabeth continues to multitask and take care of her tiny little orphan. „He's not the smallest one... I have even smaller ones.“, she says.
Back to the shelter we go with Elizabeth for a final good bye – we will also return here to film more with the possum babies and her morning volunteers later on.
